World number one Ashleigh Barty advances to the semifinals in her debut at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and will face number four seed and world number five Elina Svitolina today. Both had to play three sets in their quarterfinal matches yesterday, Svitolina even had to fend off two match points against the defending champion Petra Kvitova. In a direct comparison, the Ukrainian Svitolina leads 5-2, but Barty won the last match between the two a few weeks ago at the Miami Open semifinals 6-3, 6-3.
WTA – Women’s Tennis Association
The WTA, the Women's Tennis Association, launched a new marketing campaign at the beginning of this year's season. With the slogan "WTA For The Game," fans are given deeper insights into the players' lives, who describe decisive moments that have shaped their tennis careers. In addition to the marketing campaign, the WTA logo was redesigned, and the tournament categories have been aligned with the ATP Tour. The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is no longer a tournament in the "Premier" category but is now called a "500" tournament, analogous to the men's competitions.
Romanian Simona Halep has reached the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semifinals for the third time, after 2015 and 2017. Today's match against seventh-ranked Aryna Sabalenka will decide whether she can advance to the finals in her sixth attempt. The Belarusian Sabalenka has been playing well so far in her Porsche Tennis Grand Prix debut and has dominated her matches so far with her high-pressure game. In their direct comparison, Simona Halep leads 3-1.
Vivian Heisen in the doubles semifinals
The 27-year-old Vivian Heisen from Oldenburg and her doubles partner Yafan Wang have advanced to the semifinals after beating Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic 6-2, 6-4. The German-Chinese pair will face Ashleigh Barty and Jennifer Brady in the semis. Unfortunately, the defending champions Mona Barthel and Anna-Lena Friedsam were eliminated in the quarterfinals. They lost to Nadiia Kichenok/Raluca Olaru 3-6, 3-6.
Wins for Barty and Svitolina
Ashleigh Barty has advanced to the semifinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix after defeating Karolina Pliskova 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. Pliskova was in the lead 5:3 in the decisive third set before Ashleigh Barty managed to turn the exciting match in her favour and win. Defending champion Petra Kvitova was eliminated. Ukraine's Elina Svitolina fought back from a 6-7, 2-5 disadvantage to win 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 after 2:37 hours.
Halep reaches semifinals
Simona Halep, world’s No. 3 and second seed in Stuttgart, has reached the semifinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. She didn’t give Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova a chance in the quarterfinals, winning 6-1, 6-4 after 71 minutes. In yesterday's final match, the world number seven Aryna Sabalenka defeated 2019 finalist Anett Kontaveit 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
Review
"I am very happy and satisfied with what I achieved and how everything went. There were many great moments that I am very proud of," says Porsche Brand Ambassador Julia Görges, looking back on her tennis career. One of the greatest days was certainly April 24, 2011, when she won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. In the meantime, "Jule" has finished her playing career and is active this year on the tournament's social media channels and is close to Barty, Kerber and Co. for the fans.
